"Octobre rouge"
Beginning of 2000 I had an idea to photograph 2 neighbours Logan and Grain d’Kaf who where members of the rap group Octobre Rouge, I did not know them personally so the photo I had in the back of my head I was in no way sure they would accept! I got a friend to make the bee bonnets bought the false sunflower and arrived with camera and lights. They kindly accepted the sunflower probably thinking I was a little mad and we did the shoot with their black bonnets. In the end as they where so charming I plucked up enough courage to ask them to put on the bee bonnets for me, they did so with a certain reluctance, really just to please me! Honestly now I think I prefer the first photo. It‘s not necessary to underline the contrast, sometimes in going too far one ruins the effect.
Début 2000, j’ai eu l’idée de photographier deux voisins, Logan et Grain d’Kaf, qui étaient membres du groupe de rap « Octobre Rouge ». Je ne les connaissais pas personnellement et je n’étais pas sûr qu’ils acceptent de faire la photo que j’avais en tête! J’ai trouvé un ami qui a fait les bonnets d’abeilles, j’ai acheté les fleurs et je suis arrivé avec mes appareils et mes lumières. Ils ont gentiment accepté la fleur, pensant sûrement que j’étais un peu barjo, et nous avons fait les photos avec les bonnets noirs. A la fin, comme ils étaient si sympas, j’ai osé leur demandé s’ils voulaient bien mettre les bonnets d’abeilles juste pour moi, et, un peu à reculons, ils l’ont fait, vraiment pour me faire plaisir! À vrai dire, aujourd’hui, je crois que je préfère la première photo. Quelquefois, il faut savoir ne pas en faire trop…

"Mariage"
Opposite my studio was this bar which has not much changed to this day, seeing some joyful activity and one or two friends I entered and was told they were celebrating the wedding of Jeanette, who had just married a monsieur from the north of France, quite possibly a “ Chti,” who was introduced as “château fort!” because of his teeth. I said I would offer them a wedding picture and rushed into my studio to get my camera - et voilà!
En face de mon studio, il y avait ce bar qui d’ailleurs, est resté à peu près le même ; y remarquant une joyeuse effervescence et quelques copains, j’entrai, et appris que c’était le mariage de Jeannette que l’on fêtait. Elle venait d’épouser un monsieur du nord de la France, peut-être un Chti, que l’on surnommait “château fort”, à cause de ses dents… J’ai proposé de leur offrir une photo en guise de cadeau de mariage, et j’ai couru jusqu’à mon atelier pour y chercher mon appareil… et voilà !

"1978"
These were my neighbours in 1978 in the Montmartre/Pigalle a little more like the atmosphere of the film Amelie Poulin than today. I was a still life photographer and took this photo for fun with my camera Sinar 10x8 inch and of course my studio flash lights as the available light was not nearly enough for this kind of camera and film. Great telephone no!!!

"Henri"
I met Henri in my local bistro, Le Barauder, Place des Abbesses in Jan 2005. he in fact was a “barauder” a worker from Marseille who travelled all over Europe working, restoring flats and houses, capable of plumbing, electricity, painting and building. It was cold outside 0° C and less, and he arrived every morning dressed as in the picture with a jacket for the convenience – pockets! But with his shirt open like in the picture. I was and still am taking pictures for an eventual book “Head to Foot” et voila!!

"Chevaux"
I was asked by an advertising agency in March this year if I could take portraits of horses a little like my portraits of people? Knowing little of horses but with 2 assistants who had a passion and experience with horses and of course the trainer who looked after the horses at the riding-jumping centre of the Courneuve, in the northern suburbs of Paris, I took the challenge. It was for advertising a 10 day show starting the 15th of May. The problem for professional photographers like me is one could easily think that with modern equipment anybody around the horses could have taken these shots. Yes that’s right, but, it was a rainy cloudy day, we could not wait a week or even a day for the sun. They where lit with studio lights, without the sun the results would have been less gay!
En mars, une agence m’a demandé s’il me serait possible de faire des portraits de chevaux, un peu dans le même esprit que mes portraits de personnages.
Ne sachant rien des chevaux mais avec deux assistants passionnés d’équitation et l’entraîneur du centre équestre de la Courneuve, j’ai tenté l’expérience.
Il s’agissait d’une publicité pour les dix jours du cheval en mai. Le problème des photographes professionnels comme moi, c’est que l’on peut croire, et quelquefois avec raison, qu’avec le matériel d’aujourd’hui, n’importe qui dans le monde de l’équitation aurait pu prendre ces photos. Or, le temps était couvert, il pleuvait par moment, et nous n’avions ni une semaine ni un jour pour attendre le retour du soleil. Les chevaux étaient éclairés avec des lumières de studio; sans soleil, le résultat aurait été moins joyeux…

"Pub !"
This was a set built in a studio for a publicity for a fertiliser, of course as you can image, the final image was a young farmer embracing his wife with joy at the explosion of his results! As we were still fussing about finishing the details the farmer we had chosen for the part was waiting, bored. I took the picture without him knowing as the flash lighting was regularly going off for testing.
A trick I often use for portraits. I think the result looks more real than the pub.
Not sure the client would be so happy!

"Petit déj"
These where neighbours of mine and I made a rdv to take this picture the beginning of January during the school holidays, arranged to get there before they got up and set up my lighting, the sunlight is totally false. Interesting exercise, looking at what’s on the table, can you guess the date?

"Les Schtoumpfs"
Back to the 1980’s and a tentative to relance the Lorraine, in trouble with the closing of factories etc... The solution, a Schtoumpf amusement park, (which did not work) The photo was taken in one of the new high offices in “La Défense”
Which by contrast was starting to work very well!
Années 80, tentative de redynamiser la Lorraine en difficulté avec les fermetures d’usines… La solution ? La création d’un parc de loisirs Schtroumpfs…qui d’ailleurs n’a pas marché. La photo a été faite dans l’une des nouvelles tours de “La Défense”. Qui elle, au contraire, démarrait plutôt bien.

"Cock"
I spent a week taking pictures in a factory near Clermont-Ferrand that manufactured flour for animal food and experimented new mixtures on animals to see if they could increase the efficiency. A frankly somewhat depressing job, on my way around I encountered this man who looked after the cocks before they where taken from him to be experimented on. He loved them, I was sad for him, but wanted to take a picture for myself, and him!
J’ai passé une semaine à faire des photos près de Clermont-Ferrand dans une usine qui transformait la farine pour l’alimentation animale, et expérimentait de nouveaux mélanges susceptibles d’accroître le rendement des animaux. Il y a plus drôle comme boulot ! En circulant, je suis tombé sur cet homme qui s’occupait des coqs avant qu’ils ne soient emmenés pour expérimentation. Il aimait ces bêtes, et j’étais triste pour lui… j’ai voulu faire une photo pour moi, mais aussi pour lui !

"Camping car"
I was sent to America and Canada to take photos of the mainly housewives who wrote books for the editor Harlequin of Toronto. They wanted me to take portraits in their homes. This lady from Seattle, if my memory is right was in Las Vegas for inspiration, staying in the Hotel Pink Flamingo. Making the Pink Flamingo look like home was already a problem, getting permission quickly, impossible, so I decided to rent a camping car and take it into the desert.
On m’avait envoyé aux Etats-Unis et au Canada pour photographier les mères de famille les plus notoires qui écrivaient des livres pour les collections Harlequin à Toronto. On voulait que je les photographie chez elles. Cette dame, de Seattle je crois, cherchait l’inspiration à Las Vegas à l’hôtel Pink Flamingo. Faire en sorte que le Pink Flamingo ressemble à son domicile était déjà problématique, et obtenir rapidement l’autorisation de le faire impossible. J’ai donc décidé de louer un camping-car et de l’amener dans le désert.

"Renaud Ecalle"
Renaud Ecalle French acrobatic flying champion in 2002. Gala magazine asked me to take a picture for them for their page Focus. I rang the flying club
where he has his plane and spoke to his partners. I had the idea to suspend him in front of his plane, as he spends much of his time upside down. They thought the idea very amusing and said they would do all they could to help. You can see them in the second picture and see that luckily he was a sportsman to resist the suspension.
Renaud Ecalle, champion de voltige aérienne en 2002. Le magasine Gala m’a demandé de le photographier pour sa rubrique Focus. J’ai appelé le club de voltige où il a son avion, et j’ai parlé à ses partenaires. Je voulais le suspendre devant son avion, puisqu’il passe la plupart de son temps la tête en bas. Ils ont trouvé l’idée amusante et m’ont proposé leur aide. Ce sont eux que l’on voit dans la deuxième photo. Il fallait qu’il soit sportif pour résister à la suspension…

"Passage Brady"
Photo also taken for the agency Ogilvy and Mather and the client IBM.
They needed a photo of a possible client not in France. I new this passage, off the rue St Denis in Paris, which had Indian stores, found this one, set up my lighting as usual to give the impression it was the real lighting in the store, and this magic moment as the store owner was explaining something to me, in English of course, he made this jest!
Cettte photo a été également prise pour l’agence Ogilvy & Mather pour IBM.
Il leur fallait la photo d’un client qui pourrait être à l’étranger. Je connaissais ce passage rue Saint-Denis à Paris où l’on trouve des boutiques indiennes ; j’ai choisi celle-là ; j’ai installé mes lumières, comme à mon habitude de manière à reproduire l’ambiance réelle du magasin, et j’ai saisi ce moment magique où le propriétaire qui m’expliquait quelque chose, en anglais bien sûr !, a eu ce geste…

"Old ladies"
Advertising photo taken for the agency Ogilvy & Mather for IBM, in the 1990’s the brief was to photograph 2 old ladies in London as IBM had been surprised by the results of a survey showing that old people in England where delighted with the automatic banks and wanted a European publicity campaign to express this. The two old actresses where found for me by an agent in London. They had been friends since dancing for American troupes in Italy in the second World War. The flats found by the prod where too modern so arriving a day before the shoot I went looking for something more appropriate. In an old peoples club I found a retired actor at the bar who said Gladys’s flat would be perfect! The flat was 2 hrs away but I had an intuition that the old actor understood what I wanted, I also had an intuition that Gladys was a guy! Yes Gladys was an old adorable homosexual who’s tastes where similar to an old lady. All the accessories in the picture are his and I did not touch the décor.

Le brief était de photographier deux vieilles dames à Londres, car IBM, surpris par les résultats d’un sondage révélant que les personnes âgées en Angleterre étaient fans des guichets de banques automatiques, voulait exprimer ça dans une campagne. Un agent à Londres a trouvé pour moi ces deux actrices âgées. Elles étaient amies depuis qu’elles avaient dansé pour les soldats américains en Italie lors de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Les appartements trouvés par la production étaient trop modernes, donc arrivant un jour avant la prise de vue, je suis parti à la recherche de quelque chose de plus approprié. Au bar d’un club de seniors j’ai trouvé un acteur à la retraite qui m’a dit que l’appartement de Gladys serait parfait! C’était à deux heures de route, mais je sentais que le vieil acteur avait bien compris ce que je cherchais ; j’ai senti aussi que Gladys était en fait un homme! En effet, Gladys était un adorable homo qui avait des goûts de vieille dame. Tous les objets dans l’image sont les siens, je n’ai rien changé au décor.

"Poulets"
This is a picture I took on Tuesday of this week for fun. In French cuit means cooked for aliments or very tired for people, or drunk in slang. A poulet is a policeman in French slang. Of course I could not use real policemen as they do not have permission and not to be too disrespectful the tired version is up front. The 3 models are 1, an advertising art director I have just worked with, 2, a barman I see in my local bar most mornings, 3, a Russian worker. The cooked chicken shop is in rue des Abbesses, Montmartre. The policemen’s costumes lent to me by Maratier specialists in the location of costumes and arms for the cinema. Photo taken with a studio flash connected in the shop to give a little brightness as it was almost snowing.
Dernière rigolade en date de la semaine…
Bien évidemment, je n’ai pas pu utiliser de vrais policiers, ils n’auraient pas eu l’autorisation. Pour ne pas être trop irrespectueux, la version officielle, c’est la fatigue… Les 3 personnages sont 1 un directeur artistique avec qui je viens de travailler, 2 un barman que je vois chaque matin au bistrot, 3 un ouvrier russe.
Le volailler est rue des Abbesses à Montmartre. C’est le loueur de costumes de cinéma Maratier qui m’a très gentiment prêté les uniformes. J’ai utilisé un flash de studio, brancher à la boutique pour éclairer un peu la scène, car il neigeait presque ce matin-là.

"Devil's call"
A local tradition in the Brenne a country region in the center of France, close to Chateauroux. If you want the help of the Devil you go to a crossroads at midnight the night of the full moon, you mark on the road a circle in white and
you stand in it, then you throw a black cock in the air and when it comes down it’s the devil! Ask your favour, don’t step out of the circle, as the Devil will take you with him!
Une tradition locale dans la Brenne, région du centre de la France près de Châteauroux : si vous avez besoin d’un coup de main du diable, rendez vous à une croisée de chemins un soir de pleine lune à minuit.; tenez vous debout à l’intérieur d’un cercle blanc que vous aurez au préalable dessiné. Puis lancez un coq noir en l’air ; lorsqu’il retombera, ce sera le diable. Faites votre voeu, sans sortir du cercle, sinon le diable vous emporterait avec lui !

"Denise"
My son used to play in this park close to where we live regularly and sitting on the bench waiting for him to finish his football match I had the idea for this picture. Denise one of my neighbours agreed to play the game and we bought a baguette of bread on our way to the photo to finish the French touch
Mon fils a eu régulièrement l'habitude de jouer dans ce parc près d'où nous vivons et étant assis sur le banc l'attendant pour finir son match de football j'avais l'idée pour cette image. Denise une de mes voisines a consenti à jouer le jeu et nous a acheté une baguette de pain sur le chemin de la photo pour donner le « French touch ».

"Boucher et femme"
In 1980 when I decided to change from still life photography to taking pictures of people, one of the reasons was it was almost impossible to put humour into still life – try it ! With people its easier. This was my local butcher I asked him and his wife who worked together to come to my studio on a Sunday after closing at mid-day, that’s why the Sunday newspaper. At the time I was still using a 10x8 inch Sinar camera that I had for still life photography. The pig’s head is pretty exotic for us English, so the first picture is what I had in mind, then at the end Olivier – the butcher, suddenly did the second picture and his wife instead of collapsing with laughter played the game. French humour is as present as English humour with ordinary people. The success of « Bienvenue chez les Chtis » is no surprise for me.
En 1980, j’ai décidé de passer de la Nature morte au portrait, car il était quasi impossible d’y mettre de l’humour, essayez donc !… Avec les gens, c’est plus facile. Sur cette photo, il s’agit du boucher de mon quartier; je leur avais demandé, à lui et à sa femme avec laquelle il travaillait, de venir un dimanche après la fermeture à mon atelier, (voilà pourquoi le journal du dimanche). À l’époque, j’utilisais un appareil “20 x 25” Sinar dont je me servais pour la Nature morte. La tête de cochon est plutôt exotique pour nous les Anglais!! La première photo correspond à ce que j’avais en tête; mais à la fin de la prise de vue, Olivier, le boucher, a soudain, pour rire, mis la tête de cochon à la place de la sienne, et sa femme, pince sans rire, a joué le jeu. L’humour chez les Français « populaires » existe tout autant que chez les Anglais. Le succès de « Bienvenue chez les Chtis » ne me surprend donc pas du tout.

"Tarzan"
Leaving my hut the other morning to go to the river to get water, I saw my neighbour doing his morning exercises I ran back in to get my Hasselblad and just had time to catch him before he had finished. He does not know I have put this on my blog and as he is a trader I could be in trouble!
En quittant ma hutte l'autre matin pour aller à la rivière pour obtenir de l'eau, j'ai vu mon voisin faire ses exercices du matin, je suis revenu en courant chercher mon Hasselblad et avais juste le temps pour l'attraper avant qu'il n'ait fini. Il ne sait pas que je l'ai mis sur mon blog et comme il est un "trader" je pourrais être dans l'ennui !

"Balai vert"
The photo was taken in June 1999 as I had to take it before the guys started work, that is before 7 o’clock, that way I had daylight and a little sun. Off course I used a flash next to the camera to give a theatrical look and waited after they left to catch the guy working in the background which I added afterwards.
Cette photo a été prise entre 6 heures et 7 heures du matin au mois de Juin 1999, puisqu’il fallait la faire avant le départ au travail des éboueurs et pour avoir assez de lumière du jour et un peu de soleil. J’ai bien sûr utilisé un flash à côté de l’appareil afin de donner une apparence plus théâtrale à la scène ; je suis resté après leur départ pour capter le gars qui travaillait à l’arrière - plan et l’incruster ensuite.

"Fermiers"
Advertising picture for the group Nexity for Publicis taken in October 2001 in California close to Palm Springs. The casting was done in Los Angeles with people used to film figuration. The lady was from the Ukraine and spoke perfect French and the farmer from New York, was in the same class as Woody Allen when he was a kid. This was like a film production with a bus for make up, a kitchen,flash lighting and a generator. The sun was too much in our eyes so a flash direct with an orange filter from the left helped bring the sun round and 2 soft lights around the camera as fill in. Camera – Hasselblad - Film Ektachrome100ASA.

Le casting a été fait à Los Angeles avec les gens habitués à la figuration de film. La dame était de l'Ukraine et a parlé le français parfaitement et le fermier de New York, était dans la même classe que Woody Allen quand il était un gosse. Cela a ressemblé à une production de film avec un autobus pour maquillage, une cuisine, l'éclairage de flash et un générateur. Le soleil était trop dans nos yeux donc un flash direct avec un filtre orange à gauche a aidé à apporter le soleil et 2 éclairages doux autour de l'appareil photo.
